I grew up in East Germany under Communism. The first time that I heard about the Lord Jesus Christ was at the age of nine. I had a classmate who used to go to Bible Class on Saturdays and, because I was nosy, I joined her and I started to enjoy listening to the stories. When my dad found out why I was always late for lunch on Saturdays he gave me a good hiding and forbade me to visit those classes again.

That all changed when, at the age of 12, it began to dawn on me that the word sinner might actually be referring to me. Surely this was such an extreme term? However, my tally of wrongdoing was plain for all to see, from smashing windows to fighting in the street, from swearing to being suspended from Sunday school. But more than this, I was simply going my own way. If others could see it, God certainly could. I began to understand from the Bible that there was a Grand Canyon between what God required and the life I lived and that sinner was a description of every one of us.

While I was living away from home, the friends that I had made began to go their separate ways. I very soon became lonely and began to feel that something was missing in my life. My discontent grew and when the wife of a couple that I was boarding with invited me to church with her I decided to go. I knew then what the problem was. I had abandoned God and lived a life of my choosing.

2000 Years Distant?

With both my parents being Christians, I have attended church and been taught stories from the Bible for as long as I can remember. However, although I believed what I read in the Bible, none of this really impacted my life. I was a good boy, only young, and Jesus seemed so distant to me; 2000 years distant in fact.

Having been brought up in a religious family, I have been familiar with Christianity and God since I was young. My parents were from an Ethiopian Orthodox background and this influenced the way we were brought up. That being the case, my brothers and sisters and I were not really concerned about Christianity but followed the various religious ceremonies and celebrations because it was simply what we did as a family.
